ChatGPT can do more on a WordPress site than draft text to paste: connected through MCP, it reads the site and acts on it, one approved tool call at a time. This guide covers the ways to connect ChatGPT to WordPress, the setup step by step, what it can do once connected, and the errors that come up most often.
How do you connect ChatGPT to WordPress?
ChatGPT connects to WordPress through an MCP server for WordPress: you add a custom connector in ChatGPT’s developer mode, point it at your site’s MCP endpoint, and approve the connection with an OAuth sign-in from your own WordPress login. With Novamira this has been supported since version 1.9.2, and the authorization is revocable at any time from the WordPress admin.
The connection is direct between ChatGPT and your site. Novamira exposes the same abilities to every connected client, so ChatGPT can do on your site exactly what Claude or any other MCP client can.
Which connection method should you choose?
For ChatGPT the field is narrower than for terminal agents, but there is still a choice to make:
| Method | Setup | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Custom connector with OAuth | Enable developer mode, paste one URL, sign in | ChatGPT on the web and in the apps; the default |
| Custom MCP server on the REST API | You build and host it yourself | Teams with specific needs and time to maintain code |
| Codex CLI with the Novamira CLI | One install, one login per site | Terminal work with your OpenAI account |
The custom connector with OAuth is the route for ChatGPT itself: no password to generate or paste, and the sign-in happens on your own site. Building a custom MCP server on the REST API is possible but limits the agent to what the REST API exposes, and the code is yours to maintain. If what you actually want is OpenAI’s models working on WordPress from a terminal, that is OpenAI Codex rather than ChatGPT, and the Novamira CLI is the leaner route there.
What do you need before you start?
- A WordPress site on HTTPS with the Novamira plugin active (version 1.9.2 or later), free from the download page.
- An administrator account on the site.
- A ChatGPT plan that includes developer mode for custom connectors: the option lives in ChatGPT’s connector settings, and if it is not there, your plan does not include it.
How to connect ChatGPT to WordPress step by step
The short version, with the full detail on the ChatGPT docs page:
- In ChatGPT, enable developer mode from the connector settings.
- Create a custom connector, name it with “Novamira” in it, and point it at your site’s OAuth endpoint:
https://your-site.com/wp-json/mcp/novamira-oauth - Save and sign in when the browser opens, approving the connection from your WordPress login.
- In a conversation, enable the connector among the tools and give it a first task.
The Novamira > Configuration page in your WordPress admin generates the URL with your real site address, ready to copy. Authorizations are listed under Novamira > Manage Connections, where revoking takes effect immediately.

What can ChatGPT do on your site?
Once connected, ChatGPT works through the same ability catalog as every other client: it can create and edit posts and pages, work with custom fields, manage plugins and settings, query the database and run code, and it shows each tool call for your confirmation before acting. The full list is on the tools page. In practice ChatGPT fits content and site-management tasks best, since it runs in a chat rather than next to your codebase; for development workflows in the terminal, see the Claude Code guide for the shape of that setup.
Where the agent should work is worth deciding before the first task: building and experimenting belong on a local or staging copy, while Read Mode in Novamira Pro covers read-only inspection on production sites.
Common errors and how to fix them
No custom connector option in ChatGPT. Developer mode is off or not included in your plan. Enable it from the connector settings first.
The sign-in never completes. Some hosts filter traffic from cloud AI providers; the docs cover what to do when your host or a firewall blocks the connection. OAuth also requires HTTPS, so a plain HTTP site needs to move to HTTPS first.
ChatGPT does not use the connector in a conversation. Enable it among the conversation’s tools, and name the site in your request the first time (“on my-site.com, list the five most recent posts”).
A tool call is refused. Check which features are enabled under Novamira > Features, and whether Read Mode is active: with Read Mode on, everything that changes content, files and settings is not offered, and refused if something calls it anyway.
Next steps
Start with a read-only task to see the connection work: ask ChatGPT what theme, builder and plugins the site runs and what it would clean up. From there, the docs page is the reference for the setup detail, and how it works explains what happens between ChatGPT and your site on every call.
