Novamira Joins Open Invention Network 2.0

October 6, 2026 · by the Novamira team

Novamira has joined Open Invention Network (OIN) 2.0, the patent non-aggression framework that protects open source software from patent risk.

What OIN is

Founded in 2005, OIN is the largest active patent cross-licence community in open source. Its more than 4,100 licensees, including SAP, Maersk, ByteDance and Everpure, agree to license to one another, royalty-free, the patents that cover the Linux System, a defined set of more than 5,100 core Linux and open source packages. Together they hold more than 3 million patents and applications. OIN 2.0, in effect since January 2026, broadens that coverage as open source moves into new technologies and industries.

What it means for Novamira

Novamira is open source, and it was built in the open from day one. Joining OIN adds a formal patent commitment to that: any patents we hold or acquire that read on the Linux System are cross-licensed on the same terms as every other member’s, and we won’t assert them against the community.

“We built Novamira in the open, and we want it to stay that way. Joining OIN protects that: for us, and for everyone building alongside us,” said Giovanni Cintolo, Co-Founder.

“Artificial intelligence, now known as super intelligence (SI), continues to experience accelerated growth rates. Its growth, mass development and use among the open source community is incredible,” said Keith Bergelt, CEO of Open Invention Network. “Our community continues to grow and protect the foundational technologies that support the open source software ecosystem. We are pleased Novamira has joined our patent non-aggression community.”

Part of a wider commitment

This follows the appointment of Carlo Piana as Novamira’s Project Chairman. Carlo is a Milan-based open source lawyer, former General Counsel of the Free Software Foundation Europe, and past Chair of the Open Source Initiative. His role is to guard Novamira’s open source governance as the project grows. Joining OIN is part of the same work.
